CINNAMON: Why Ceylon is better than Cassia?

September 27, 2016

Cinnamon is a fantastic spice that has many health benefits, it can improve blood sugar levels and increase insulin sensitivity. But most cinnamon sold in stores is Cassia, and not true Ceylon Cinnamon. Why is this important?

Ceylon cinnamon is the only true cinnamon, it is lighter in colour and sweeter in taste. If eaten regularly and in the right amounts it can have real impact on blood sugar levels. Unfortunately toxicity might be an issue for Cassia, as it contains a chemical called coumarin in much higher concentration than Ceylon cinnamon. So if you love this spice as much as I do, please pay attention to what you are buying as it may be harmful in large quantities.

True cinnamon is usually labeled ‘Ceylon cinnamon’ and it might be more expensive, but I believe it is worth its price. If there is no mention on the label about the variety, I would steer clear…
